AI is changing the way we search and get found. But the foundations of online visibility, good content, strong technology and authority, are still there. Meanwhile, many marketing managers are losing track. GEO, SEO, AEO… what should you focus on? And what does it mean for your content strategy? We make the difference between GEO, SEO and AEO clear, and give you the tools to make the right choices in your content strategy.
Search engines are here to stay, even with AI
Don’t let anyone convince you that search engines are disappearing. Google and Bing still index the internet in their own way. AI tools such as ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews also get their information from that same index. Only the answer presented to the user changes.
So what’s happening is that your content is no longer literally shown as a blue link, but processed into an AI answer. And that has consequences for how you optimise.
How does traditional SEO work again?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the classic way of optimising to rank higher in search results on, for example, Google. You work on three pillars: - Technology: Your site must be fast, mobile-friendly and easy to index
- Content: The content must be relevant, logically structured and keyword-focused
- Authority: You work on a strong backlink profile and online reputation
This remains the foundation for good rankings. Without good SEO, there’s little chance you’ll become visible in any system, AI or not.
What is AEO?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It’s about optimising your content to give direct answers. Think of:
- FAQs on pages
- Structured data (such as schema mark-up) so that search engines understand what you offer
- Answers to questions in natural language
For a long time, AEO was focused on featured snippets or zero-click results in Google. But it’s also valuable in voice search and smart AI assistants. With AEO you help AI that searches search engines understand faster that your content contains the right answer.
What is GEO?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the newest player. Here you optimise your content so that AI search engines such as ChatGPT, Google SGE or Perplexity include your content in their answers.
But note: these AI tools also get their information from existing sources, often from the Google or Bing index. So without findable, well-structured content you won’t get anywhere. Here are a few points that help with GEO optimisation:
- Writing in natural language (a question-and-answer structure works well)
- Authoritative content with reliable sources
- Provide context while writing: describe in detail how a service, product or offering should be applied. The AI then picks this up as a relevant answer.
- Content that AI can easily cite or paraphrase
So GEO isn’t a replacement for SEO, but an extra layer. It forces you to structure your content even more clearly and to think from the user’s questions.
GEO vs SEO vs AEO – which suits your situation?
When do you choose what? Here are a few considerations:
Go for SEO if…
- Your foundations are not yet in order (technology, content, authority)
- You want to build organic traffic through traditional search results
Go for AEO if…
- You work a lot with customer questions
- You consider voice search or zero-click visibility important
- You want to claim authority on specific topics
Go for GEO if…
- You want to stay ahead of AI search results
- You use content strategically for thought leadership
- Your existing content already scores well in SEO and you now want to optimise further
Most marketing managers don’t choose one or the other, but look for a combination. A content strategy with SEO as the foundation, AEO as a smart addition, and GEO as a forward-looking component.
