Is your #1 ranking still worth it with AI Mode?

You have probably worked hard on your website to boost your online visibility. The goal was often clear: that #1 position in Google for your most important search term. And now, after investing heavily in content, technical work and authority, you have got there.

But Google’s layout is changing. Above your #1 link you now see ads and a large ‘AI Overview‘ (an AI-generated summary). Users can even switch to AI Mode, a separate, generative search feature for complex questions.

You are right to ask, “What does that #1 position still deliver? And where should I focus now?”. We explain why your #1 ranking remains an important foundation, but why the return on it is shifting. It is no longer purely about the click, it is about authority.

Is your #1 ranking still worth it with AI Mode?

The visual impact on your #1 position

Although your #1 ranking proves your authority, we need to be realistic about visibility. The search engine results page (SERP) has simply become more crowded.

For many searches, the order is now:

  1. Ads
  2. The AI Overview block
  3. Possibly “People also ask”
  4. Only then your #1 organic link.

Your position now sits physically lower on the page. A user has to actively scroll past the direct AI answer to reach your link. That makes a #1 position less of a guarantee of a click. The return is no longer as self-evident as it used to be.

A logical question is: what is a #1 position still worth when the AI sits above it? The answer is that this position has not become worthless. The value has simply shifted.

Google’s AI does not make up answers; it looks for the most reliable, expert and authoritative sources on the web. For Google, a #1 position is the strongest signal that your page has that authority.

As a result, there is a considerable chance that the content of your page will be used for the answer in the AI Overview or AI Mode. The SEO work you have done in the past now serves as proof of quality for the AI. You have already proved that you are an expert, which gives you a head start in being chosen as a source.

Your #1 ranking as the foundation for AI

What AI Mode changes for your keywords

The focus of your strategy is shifting from ‘having the ranking’ to ‘what the ranking delivers’. This differs greatly by type of keyword.

  1. Focus for informational keywords (e.g. “what is…”)
  • What it delivers: Considerably less direct traffic. The answer to the question is already in the AI box (‘zero-click’). Your authority does deliver something new here, though: attribution. This is a powerful form of brand awareness. You ‘rank’ as the expert that Google cites, which strengthens your brand.
  1. Focus for transactional keywords (e.g. “buy wood burner”)
  • What it delivers: Still very valuable clicks. Even in AI Mode, the buyer is doing research but has to make the purchase somewhere. The #1 position beneath the AI block is an extremely strong buying signal. The focus here is 100% on converting the visitor who takes the trouble to scroll down.
  1. Focus for ‘conversational’ keywords (e.g. “best CRM for 10 people”)
  • What it delivers: This is AI Mode’s home turf. The traditional #1 link delivers little here. You need to go all in on feeding the AI the most complete, nuanced answer. The ‘win’ is that you are the answer and are presented as the ultimate authority.

Your ranking is your proof of authority

The days when a #1 position guaranteed a steady stream of visitors are not necessarily over. Stop seeing your #1 ranking as the end goal, and see it as the foundation of your authority. It's proof that your content is of high quality and that Google trusts you.

You now use that authority to reach a new, higher goal, namely becoming the preferred source for AI. The focus of a smart strategy shifts from counting rankings to cashing in on authority.
