AI continually brings new opportunities. Of course Google is also one of the players trying to lead the way in AI. One of the newest developments from Google is the introduction of Gems within Google’s AI called Gemini. Gems allows users to create specialised AI chatbots tailored to specific tasks or topics. In this article you will learn what Gemini Gems actually are, how they differ from other AI models and how your business can benefit from them.

Meet Google’s Gemini Gems

What are Google Gemini Gems?

Google Gems are trained chatbots within Google’s Gemini. What is unique about these Gems is that they give users the ability to create their own specialised AI chatbots. These chatbots are trained on a limited dataset, which means they are tailored specifically to one topic or task. This allows users to put together a team of virtual experts who can support them with specific projects or challenges.

Unlike general AI models, which can often answer a wide range of questions, Gems are designed for niche areas. This makes them extremely suitable for businesses looking for AI solutions that are accurate and relevant to their situation.

Differences between Google Gems and trained GPTs

A frequently asked question is what exactly the differences are between Google Gems and trained GPT agents within ChatGPT. Both AI models offer a number of advantages, but their specialisation and application differ. It is important to know that Google Gems is still very much in development. This means that the performance of Gems can vary in some situations and is therefore not yet as good as ChatGPT’s GPTs. In brief, this is what we already know about the differences in performance:

  • Google Gems: These chatbots are ideal for creating a virtual assistant focused on answering specific questions, collecting feedback or supporting certain business processes. Gems are linked to the files and data you have stored in your Google Workspace. This means you can train the Gems and link them to data sources you select yourself. Even so, Google Gems sometimes deviate from a clear instruction and unintentionally draw on other data sources when generating answers.
  • Trained GPTs: Trained GPTs, such as those in ChatGPT, have broader applications and can handle a wide range of topics and questions. These models are trained on an enormous amount of data, which makes them very versatile. You can also easily upload documents or other files when setting up a GPT in the instruction environment. ChatGPT is therefore still a bit ahead of Gemini Gems in this respect.

Where Google Gems can be very attractive for Google Workspace users, trained GPTs such as ChatGPT are more flexible and generally stick better to the instructions they are given. Depending on your field, one model may suit better than the other. We advise keeping a close eye on both features, because Google is developing rapidly.

How can Google Gems help businesses?

For businesses, Google Gems offer a range of benefits that can help with everyday tasks and strategic decisions. Here are some ways in which Google Gems can add value to your business:

  1. Increasing efficiency
Google Gems can improve efficiency within your business. By creating custom chatbots that carry out specific tasks, you can save time on repetitive and time-consuming processes. Think of customer service, answering frequently asked questions or collecting customer feedback. Instead of responding yourself, you can ask a Gem to respond to a question. You can also link your company policy and strategy in Google Docs to a specific Gem, so that it always gives an accurate answer.
  2. Developing new ideas and strategies
As an entrepreneur, coming up with new ideas and strategies is a constant challenge. Gemini Gems can act as sparring partners that help you brainstorm about new projects or marketing strategies. By using a custom-built dataset tailored specifically to your industry, you get input that is far more focused and relevant than what you would get from a general-purpose AI.
  3. Personal assistance
Google Gems can act as virtual assistants that help with tasks such as managing calendars, gathering information and reminding you of important deadlines. Because they are tailored to your specific needs, you get an assistant that understands exactly what your priorities are, something you can't always expect from standard virtual assistants.

How it differs from other personalised AI solutions

What sets Google Gems apart from other AI solutions is the seamless integration with Google services such as Gmail, Google Drive and YouTube. This allows Gems to pull up-to-date information directly from these sources, which is especially useful for entrepreneurs who already work with Google Workspace. As a result, Gems can give more specific and more relevant answers to user questions. Although trained GPTs such as ChatGPT can also be deployed in a very targeted way for specific tasks, Gems offer the advantage of these deeper integrations and access to current data within the Google ecosystem.

In addition, Gems offer flexible token limits that are much higher than those of other models, which allows them to support more complex and longer interactions. Like GPTs, they can be customised with tailor-made instructions and knowledge bases, which makes them suitable for specialist applications. Where ChatGPT excels in customisability and precise task execution, however, Google Gems offer a unique combination of specialisation and integration, with the added benefit of their ethics and safety guidelines.

Getting started with Google Gems in your business

Google Gems offer an opportunity to use AI in a very specific way within your business. Whether you are looking for a way to optimise processes, generate new ideas or get personal support with everyday tasks, these chatbots can be a valuable addition.
